The level you need: B2
New Skilled Worker applicants must prove they can read, write, speak and understand English to at least level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale. There is a transitional provision: people whose current visa was granted before 8 January 2026 and who are extending or updating it may only need level B1 and may not have to prove their English again. Because the rules distinguish between new applicants and existing visa holders, check which applies to you on GOV.UK.
How to prove your English
GOV.UK accepts several ways to meet the requirement: passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) with an approved provider; holding a UK academic qualification such as a GCSE, A level or Scottish equivalent in English; holding a degree taught in English and awarded by a UK institution; or holding an overseas degree taught in English, confirmed as equivalent by Ecctis. You only need to meet the requirement through one of these routes. Check the approved tests and exact qualification rules on GOV.UK before booking anything.
Who is exempt
You do not need to prove your English if you are a national of one of the majority English-speaking countries listed by GOV.UK (such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA and several others). Certain regulated professionals — including doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and vets — who have already passed an English assessment accepted by their professional body for registration do not need to prove English again for the visa. Confirm whether an exemption applies to you on the current GOV.UK page.
Do dependants need to prove English?
The English language requirement described here applies to the main Skilled Worker applicant. GOV.UK's Skilled Worker guidance does not impose this English requirement on dependants (a partner or children) applying to join or stay with the main visa holder. Requirements can differ by route and can change, so a dependant should always check the specific GOV.UK guidance for their own application. This guide is general information, not immigration advice.
