Which engineering roles are eligible
GOV.UK lists the main engineering occupations as eligible for the Skilled Worker route, with their occupation codes: mechanical engineers (code 2122), civil engineers (code 2121), electrical engineers (code 2123), production and process engineers (code 2125), and engineering professionals not elsewhere classified (code 2129). Your Certificate of Sponsorship must use the occupation code that matches the job. Eligibility and codes can change, so check the current GOV.UK eligible-occupations list for your specific discipline.
Professional registration is not a visa requirement
Unlike nursing, where NMC registration is a legal requirement to practise, engineering in the UK does not legally require registration to work. The Engineering Council awards voluntary professional titles — Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech) — through its licensed engineering institutions. These are a respected professional benchmark that can strengthen your applications, but they are a professional credential, not a condition of the Skilled Worker visa. Check GOV.UK for the actual visa requirements.
Find a licensed sponsor before you apply
Only an employer on the Home Office register of licensed sponsors can sponsor your visa. A sponsor licence means an employer can sponsor a work visa — not that they are hiring, have a vacancy, or will sponsor any given role. Check whether an employer is licensed before investing time in an application: use our free sponsor licence checker to look up any company against the daily-refreshed register, and browse our live engineering roles, which are all with employers on the register.
Salary going rates and English
Engineering occupations use the standard Skilled Worker salary test — the higher of the general threshold and the occupation's GOV.UK going rate — not NHS pay scales. We do not quote figures here because they change; see our sponsored-salary guide for the median advertised salary per occupation alongside the official going rate and dates. New applicants must also prove English at level B2 (CEFR). This is general information, not immigration advice — always confirm the requirements for your occupation and circumstances on GOV.UK.
